Yeah but he’s still a total cunt
Joffrey is absolutely a monster. The closest we’ve seen to a redeeming quality in him is that he’s scared of dying. Not much to work with there! And certainly not enough for me to worry overmuch about whether his fate is one of his choosing. Anyway, how is it that Myrcella and Tommen are decent little kids and Joffrey is a sadistic bag of murderous evil?
No sympathy here.
Well and it’s possible to be a fully-formed and fully-realized character and still be a villain. In fact, the best and most effective villains - like the best and most effective heroes - are the ones that feel like they could be actual people, with all the myriad emotions and feelings and complications that personhood entails. But Joffrey being able to feel fear - or even fealty to the other members of his family, which we’ve seen snatches of in his dealings with his mother and if the preview for next week’s finale is anything to go by also in some of his reactions to his grandfather - or even love doesn’t somehow magically obviate his abominable treatment of Sansa or the prostitute Tyrion gifted him with a few episodes back or, really, everyone else with whom he interacts on the show. Joffrey being able to feel doesn’t make him less a villain; it simply makes him a well-realized one.
Yes! Joffrey being afraid doesn’t give him a “get of jail” free Woobie pass for all his past deeds and general suckiness.
